Everybody Done Gone

February 16, 2010

I’ve recently read through the book Writing Better Lyrics by Pat Pattison. This is probably a must have for song writers. I really like his boxes analogy. Each verse of a song can be interpreted as a box. Each box must relate and expand upon the previous boxes. Each box(verse) has a theme which builds upon the previous ones.

Immediately after that I was writing a sample song for some online music lessons I am planning.  I wanted to use the Box/Verse paradigm in my writing. The tune started off as a 12 bar blues. After a few iterations, I came up with some decent lyrics and a tune which is reminiscent of an old style country blues or maybe even a bluegrass type song.

The name of the song is Everybody Done Gone. Just saying the name in my head as I write gives me the blues. I can really imagine the Honey Dewdrops jamming out on this song. There are some spots between the lyrics where some great guitar picking fits nicely. I hope they will get a chance to listen to it sometime.  The same is true for any readers out there as well.
